Riceviamo e pubblichiamo una nota inviataci da Arrigo Colombo, responsabile del “Movimento per la Società di Giustizia e per la Speranza” di Lecce, in cui ci invita a diffondere il documento di protesta, da inviare a Barack Obama per il suo dietro-front in tema di salvaguardia ambientale, che pubblichiamo in calce, sia in inglese che in italiano.

Clean air cannot wait

“Clean air can wait”: so said President Obama, suspending the campaign against air pollution and against global warming until 2013.

The reason given: the crisis, lower costs for businesses and their growth, job recovery. With this, the President indicated indirectly the cause of his decision: the pressure of big business, of oil companies, of finance in general – to which he presumably has ceded.

But there is a greater responsibility, that of the US towards humanity.

A very serious  responsibility after Bush’s refusal to ratify the Kyoto protocols. Bush, the oil companies’ friend , and an oilman himself, who thus put his interest before that of his people and of all humanity. So the delay of a strong nation and major polluter; a delay that has yet to be recovered, it needs to speed up rather than stop.

President Obama thinks about  business and the workplace, but more  urgent are the diseases that cause pollution; just in the U.S.; and the most urgent are especially the disasters towards which global warming is leading us, and which according to scholars  can no longer be avoided, and this is why one must be solicitous about  strong action against greenhouse gases.

President Obama must also think of the hope that his election has caused in the world; he must think of what the world expects from him.

He must think of the qualified consensus that he may miss through his actions: the consensus of environmentalists, of young people, of those who suffer from pollution.

This also concerns us because – like many others around the world – we would like him to be re-elected. We would like our hope not to be lost.

L’aria pulita non può attendere

«L’aria pulita può attendere»: così ha detto il Presidente Obama nel sospendere la campagna contro l’inquinamento atmosferico, e contro il surriscaldamento, fino al 2013.

Il motivo addotto: la crisi, i minori costi per le imprese e la loro crescita, il recupero di posti di lavoro.

Con questo il Presidente indicava indirettamente le cause della sua decisione: la pressione delle grandi imprese, dei petrolieri, della finanza in genere. Cui presumibilmente ha ceduto.

C’è però una responsabilità maggiore, ed è quella degli USA di fronte all’umanità.

Responsabilità gravissima dopo il rifiuto di Bush di ratificare i protocolli di Kyoto; Bush l’amico dei petrolieri e petroliere egli stesso; che dunque  poneva il suo interesse davanti a quello del suo popolo e dell’umanità intera. Quindi il ritardo di una grossa nazione forte inquinatrice; ritardo che dev’essere ancora recuperato, che ha bisogno di accelerazione piuttosto che di soste.

Il Presidente Obama pensa alle imprese e ai posti di lavoro; ma più urgenti sono le  malattie che l’inquinamento provoca; proprio negli USA; e più urgenti sono soprattutto le catastrofi cui il surriscaldamento globale ci sta portando, che secondo gli studiosi ormai non si potranno evitare; e tanto più quanto meno si sarà solleciti di una forte azione e accelerazione contro i gas serra.

Il Presidente Obama deve anche pensare  alla speranza che la sua elezione ha suscitato nel mondo; a ciò che il mondo si attende da lui.

Deve pensare al consenso qualificato che può così perdere: consenso degli ambientalisti, dei giovani, di coloro che soffrono per l’inquinamento.

Anche questo ci preoccupa poiché – come tanti altri nel mondo – vorremmo che fosse rieletto. Vorremmo che quella speranza non andasse perduta.
